Willow the Wonderer : The Gift
Behind the Scenes
How Willow the Wonderer came to be
Our Heart Project
One sunny afternoon, strolling along the Valla beach in NSW's Mid North Coast, Reeta and Darren discovered a shared dream: They longed to create storybooks that they wish they'd grown up with - books filled with beauty and adventure that would plant seeds of wisdom in young minds.
Their hope was simply that these seeds would blossom with time and guide the little ones in their journey through life.
Darren threw in an idea he'd conceived a long time ago about Willow, a child who wanders from home searching for happiness. In this wandering soul, they found a kindred spirit, an endearing character brimming with the innocence and curiosity.
Over the ensuing months and many lively conversations, sketches and drafts later, the idea they first discussed in April 2020 blossomed into a story.
Reeta wove the words and Darren brought it to life with his enchanting pictures. Through all the ups and downs of COVID, they released the first Willow the Wonderer storybook in November 2021.
And thus, Willow the Wonderer was born.
Meet An Unlikely Hero
A little wise ass we call Willow
Meet Reeta Dhar
Debut Children's Book Author
Reeta's Story
Reeta grew up surrounded by stories; tales from the olden days her grannies used to tell, scary stories that her siblings would share, legends about ancient yogis her dad read aloud, Bollywood films her mum rented and stories from all the glorious books she read.
Stories became her doorway into a world of imagination that enthralled, enticed and enchanted in equal measure. They inspired her to travel, climb mountains, do yoga, meditate and seek out the magic in life.
Prior to pursuing her love of writing and publishing, Reeta had an accomplished career in business. In Willow the Wonderer, Reeta's first series of picture books, she brings together her love of rhyme and the natural world with life's little lessons she has learnt along the way.
Meet Darren Pryce
Internationally Acclaimed Illustrator
Darren's Story
Darren started drawing before he started walking, or so the story goes. He was the quiet one in the family who spent all his time drawing at the kitchen table; his uncle was surprised to find out that he even had legs!
It was no surprise however that he pursued studies in design and a career as an illustrator, art director and contemporary artist. A classically trained painter with expertise in digital media, Darren seamlessly combines the two disciplines in his craft.
Darren has won many major national and international illustration awards, including Gold at the Melbourne Art Directors Awards and London International Award. Darren is a versatile illustrator and many different styles of his work have been featured in the Communication Arts Magazine, American Illustration Annuals and Leuzers Archive. His career highlights includes doing the cover of Time Magazine and Los Angeles Times Magazine.
Darren draws upon his years of experience and love of the fine arts and nature to illustrate Willow the Wonderer picture book series, creating an innovative new style each time.
